On November 12th, 2009 Tepper Galleries will spotlight the unique Collection of Marjorie J. and Robert L. Lawrence. This auction will feature over 400 lots of rare and exotic objects that tell the story of a life well traveled and trace the ancient trade routes of the Mediterranean, Near East and North Africa.
Among the offerings will be painted Italian furniture and works of art including a 17th Century Florentine portal - Oriental rugs, pillows, nomadic clothing and related accent pieces bearing the exotic imprint of Persia, Turkey, the Caucasus and other Eastern Mediterranean cultures – ancient Roman glassware, Syrian paper maché pen cases and Continental patch boxes – camel saddles and African carvings.
The Lawrence’s passion for collecting led them to the bazaars of the Mid-East and North Africa and inspired Marjorie to become one of the first women rug dealers and to launch a thriving business called the PILLOWRY which operated from 1971 – 1989 on Manhattan's Upper East Side.
This collection will appeal to the cognoscenti, interior decorator and private collector seeking authentic, one of a kind treasures. Much of it was acquired through specialist dealers in Spain, Italy, Germany, England and America as well as the Lawrence’s direct purchases from mosques, bazaars and even off the backs of camels!
